How many clinical hours does an AGPCNP program require?
The 2022 NTF Standards for Quality NP Education, published by AACN, set a minimum of 750 direct patient care clinical hours per NP track, up from the older 500-hour standard that still serves as the AANP and ANCC certification-eligibility floor. Because the standard is still phasing in across schools, total AGPCNP clinical hours typically run from roughly 500 to 750 or more. Confirm your program's exact requirement with your school, and we place to it.
Why do I see both 500 and 750 hours quoted?
They come from different bodies. The 500-hour figure is the certification-eligibility floor from the AANP Certification Board and the ANCC, the minimum supervised hours to sit the exam. The 750-hour figure is the 2022 NTF education standard, a minimum of 750 direct patient care hours per NP track. A program can meet 500 and still be moving toward 750, so both numbers appear. Plan around the range and your school's specific number.
What patient populations and rotations must AGPCNP hours cover?
AGPCNP is longitudinal, non-emergent primary care spanning late adolescence, roughly age 13, through the frail elderly. Rotations commonly include adult primary care, geriatrics and gerontology, chronic-disease management, and long-term care or skilled-nursing exposure. Few single sites offer both continuity adult primary care and authentic frail-elder hours, which is what makes AGPCNP placement hard to arrange alone.
Who can serve as an AGPCNP preceptor?
Generally an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (A-GNP or AGPCNP-BC), a Family Nurse Practitioner, or a physician (MD or DO) in primary care, internal medicine, or geriatrics, subject to your program's rules. The preceptor does not have to hold the exact AGPCNP credential. We verify eligibility against your school's requirements before you commit.
Why is the geriatrics or long-term-care rotation so hard to find?
There are fewer providers with a concentrated older-adult or frail-elder panel, and the settings that do, such as skilled-nursing facilities and geriatric clinics, are not always set up to precept students. That scarcity is why we start the geriatric and long-term-care search first and search widely, while continuity adult primary care is comparatively easier to secure.
Do simulation hours count toward AGPCNP clinical hours?
No. Simulation does not count toward the direct patient care clinical hours the standard requires. Precepted telehealth may count, subject to your program. Confirm both with your school, since programs apply these rules differently.
Do you work with my university's AGPCNP program?
